Korin took in a sharp breath as Kiya relived her experience. As she was talking, he had put his hand over hers in an attempt to comfort her. Her skin felt as cold as ice under his and he wondered why she was so cold. When she told him of his suspicion, he immediately thought of his time in the Si Wong Desert and how he, Raiki, and Agni had been attacked. He brought up his other hand to his chin and felt the wound still healing from when he had been cut. He looked into Kiya's eyes and solemnly said, "I think you're right. When I was in the Si Wong Desert during one of my father's missions, my, um, acquaintances and I were attacked by earthbenders." He thought for a moment, then stood up straight, stretching his arms above his head. "Enough of this talk though. It is your first night back and I don't want you to have to think about this. Not now. Preferably not ever, but we both know that's not possible. Let's go to dinner. I'm sure the cooks have been creating a wondrous feast for us. And even if their not done, I can give you a tour of our house or something. Anything to get away from this place."

Misora wandered back to where she had left Feru, but he wasn't there. She pouted a little, then wandered around looking for him. When she didn't find him, she went back to her room and opened a drawer. In it were three different locks of hair and a bag of sand from the Ember Island beach. "I just need Korin's, then I can make Mamma's present," she said with a satisfied smile. She closed the drawer, then skipped over to a window and randomly shot out lightning, making pretty patterns in the sky. ~~~~~ Kiya blushed a little when Korin put his hand on hers, but was grateful for it. She nodded a little when he agreed, though she wondered why earthbenders would want to kidnap her and kill her father. At Korin's change of subject, she smiled. "Okay, I'll be out in a minute, if you'll meet me by the front door." She hesitantly pulled her hand out from under his and walked into her room. She caught sight of herself in a mirror and held in a scream. She looked like a mess! And Korin, prince of the Fire Nation, had just seen her like this! Five changes of clothes and nine hundred hasty hairbrush strokes later, she was finally somewhat satisfied with her appearance. She had pulled her hair back and twisted it, holding it in place with her two sais. It was dangerous, but she had mastered using the knives as hair decorations years ago. Nothing except a gentle pull in the right direction would make them fall out, and they wouldn't harm a single hair. She walked to the front door and opened it. "Sorry for keeping you waiting," she said.

Sneaking into one of the supplies storage sheds in the back of the mansion, Feru began to pocket small fireworks. They wouldn't cause any damage, but they sure were loud! Tonight was going to be fun!
After getting the fireworks he desired, Feru sneaked inside the dining room when no one was around. Placing the fireworks near Kiya and Korin's designated seats, Feru hid them out of sight. He also placed some near the servants' walkway. Smiling to himself, he sneaked back out once he was sure that the fireworks wouldn't be discovered.
A few minutes later, Feru was back in his room, trying to find something to give to Mother. He thought after a moment and then got up to one of his secret hiding place for his most prized possessions. Making sure that no one was coming in his room any time soon, Feru went to the floorboards near the base of his bed. Prying off one of them, a wooden box laid beneath them. Fetching it, Feru placed the boards back in their place and sat on his bed.
Opening the box, Feru took out a set of unique shurikens that he had designed and made a while back. The shurikens were no ordinary shurikens as they possessed hidden blades that would pop out when they were thrown. Also, the main unique feature was that the shurikens were branded with the fire nation logo in the center and laced with oil. When they were to be thrown, the firebender could ignite them, causing flaming shurikens to fly at the enemy.
No one knew about these as Feru wanted to use them when he was the Black Phoenix, but somehow, his sentimentality for his mother's shared interest with shuriken-jutsu made him change his mind. Besides, he could probably make better ones later. Smiling a real smile at the idea of how his mother would enjoy the gift, Feru closed the wooden box and tucked it under his arm. Running out to the banquet room, Feru hurried to Mother's dinner party.

Misora finally skipped out of the palace to go find her older brother. She hadn't seen Korin for a while and she was getting bored. Besides, she needed to get some of his hair to make her present for Mamma. She looked around the streets, getting away before the servants could insist that she be carried around in a palinquin. She didn't like the things. She preferred to walk and run. She needed to hurry and find Korin so she could be in time for dinner.

Skidding to a stop, Feru poked his head into the banquet hall. The servants were still placing food on the table and making final preparations. Impatient, Feru wondered when everyone was going to get here. He really wanted to show Mother his gift for her.
Pacing, Feru began to doubt his gift. After all, Aunt Azula said that his family was weak. Why waste his time on them? Feru frowned. Even though he wanted to be Fire Lord, it didn't mean he didn't care about his family too. Aunt Azula was getting more confusing as the time to act approached. Feru stopped his pacing. Maybe Aunt Azula was right. After all, Korin was weak and his family would be mad once he tries to overthrow Korin's right when he would become Fire lord instead. He glanced down at his gift, torn between an innocent love for his mother, and his desire to become Fire Lord and the steps to obtain it.
OOC: Poor Feru. Why can't he be a typical 11 year old?

Mai walked toward the banquet hall, keeping a straight face but partiallly despising what it all meant. Why did people have to celebrate getting old. Thirty-seven! That was just three years short of forty! She groaned to herself. Things seemed so much easier twenty years ago, despite the war. Just outside the hall, Mai saw Feru pacing, an agitated expression on his face. She could see she had caught her son off guard. He normally kept his face as blank as she left hers. "Feru?" she asked, approaching him, "are you all right?"

Feru jumped when Mother called out his name. "Mother!" He cried out in surprise and quickly hid the wooden box behind his back. "Um, Happy Birthday!" He gave a tentative smile. "I'm all right." He shuffled from one foot to another, feeling awkward.

Mai looked down at Feru for a moment or so, then returned his smile. "Just wait until you turn forty-sever, kiddo. Then you'll see how happy your birthday is." She placed a hand on his shoulder and guided him toward the banquet hall, glancing at the way he was holding his hands behind his back. "What are you hiding?" she asked in a teasingly curious way.

Feru blinked. "You're not happy?" He asked, confused at his mother's joke as he was guided intot he banquet hall. He blushed when his Mother pried about her present. "Um..." He stopped walking, and the boy within him decided to give his Mother his present. He pulled the wooden box out from behind his back. "Its for you...I made it." He handed it to her, hoping that she would like it.

Mai smiled a little at Feru's question. "I was just kidding, Feru," she told him. She looked at the box he presented her with. Opening it, she saw a set of beautiful shrukiens, some of the finest she'd ever seen. "They're beautiful, son. Thank you." She leaned down and kissed the top of his head. He was growing up, she realized, but he still held some of his sweet innocence of his childhood.

Feru smiled. A genuine smile. "I'm glad you like it! It took me months to make it!" He blushed again when she kissed the top of his head. "Mother..." He whined, hoping the servants didn't see that. He glanced around the room, suddenly remembering his pranks for Korin and Kiya. His expression went blank. "Did Misora tell you that Kiya accepted your invitation?" He asked, changing the subject.

When Kiya had left the window, Korin had quickly walked to the front door. On his way, he had seen his reflection in one of the windows and almost dropped dead. His hair was stuck to his forehead from sweat and his face was a blustery red. He quickly smoothed down his hair and tried to cool down his face. He continued walking, but more slowly this time. He wanted to have a chance to cool down before he got there. When she opened the door, his heart almost stopped. There she was, her hair brushed and neatly up with two sais keeping it back, her face bright and almost glowing, and a smooth, to-die-for scent wafting from her skin. He swallowed, speechless, then blinked a couple times. "Um. No. It's fine. Uh. You look...pretty." He mentally whacked himself in the head over his choice of words and stuttering, then gave her a quick smile, holding out his arm for her to grab onto. "Well, we must be off. Dinner must almost be ready."
Zuko made his way down the hall to the dining room with a red, wooden box in his hands. He held it gingerly against his chest, wondering if he should really give Mai what he was planning on giving her. Inside the slender box was his pearl dagger his mother had given to him before she disappeared. He had always kept it in the folds of his clothes, not nessecarily for using it when he didn't have a weapon, but just so he could have a piece of his mother with him at all times. It was one of his most prized possesions, but so was Mai. He swiftly ducked into the dining room before he saw anyone and he took his place at the head of the table. Unlike most Fire Lords, Zuko didn't like making a big entrance. He'd rather be there before everyone else so that he was not noticed at all. He placed the wooden box on his lap, tapping it gently with his fingers.

Kiya's breath caught as she really looked at Korin. He was so handsome, she could hardly believe it. She blushed red when Korin told her she looked pretty. "T-thanks," she stuttered, glancing down for a second. "You look nice, too." She took his arm hesitantly, her heart suddenly beating double-time the instant she touched him. From out of nowhere, Misora suddenly appeared. "Korin," the little girl said breathlessly, "Can I have some of your hair?" ~~~~~ Mai sighed as Feru protested her kiss and ruffled his hair. She felt an almost physical pain when his expression went blank. It was so similar to her bored expressions at that age. "Yes, your sister told me," she said. "I am glad Kiya accepted our invitation. It must be so lonely in her house now." They entered the banquet hall then, and Mai smiled when she spotted Zuko in his usual place. He was always there early. She took her seat next to him, giving Feru a pat before she left him. "Birthdays are so depressing," she murmured to her husband.

Feru nodded. "Well, she has Korin to keep her company now." He replied as they entered the banquet hall. He froze. Father was already there. Making sure he looked presentable, Feru walked in after his Mother. "Hello, Father." Feru greeted calmly as he went to take his usual seat beside his Mother. Misora would no doubt be next to him, as Korin would be next to father. He gave a mental sneer, but then his mood brightened at the thought of his prank.

Korin nearly jumped out of his skin when Misora suddenly appeared. He gave the little girl a quick, nasty look, then smiled at her. "Um. Sure. But afterward will you take Kiya to the banquet hall for me? I have to get Mother's present from my room." He bent down on one knee and leaned his head towards his little sister. "Do not let this hurt, Miso."
****
Zuko smiled as Feru and Mai came into the banquet hall. "Hello Feru. Ready for dinner?" He took Mai's hand in his own as she sat down next to him, then gave her a soft smile. He tightened his grip on the box in his lap with his one hand, deciding whether or not to give it to her or not, then slowly brought it up to the table. He gave her the box, then held his breath.
